Automatic chlorine generators, more commonly referred to as saltwater pools, are a great addition to any pool located in our around Baton Rouge, La. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about how they work and what they do and Tropical Pools is here to clear up some of the misunderstandings swimming around them.

First, there are some cost benefits to running saltwater pool. They eliminate the need to purchase sanitizing chemicals because the on-site production of the sanitizer in a saltwater pool is produced automatically. A chlorinated pool’s chlorine is added manually on an ongoing basis. In a saltwater pool, the chlorine is created through a regenerative process.

This happens when the water in the pool is converted to a mild saline solution of sodium chloride. Next, a chlorine generator is added to the pool’s filtration system to circulate the water, and chlorination occurs.  The pool salt is dissolved in the pool water and the sodium chloride is transformed into a sanitizer, killing bacteria, viruses, algae and anything else in the water.  The chlorine generator uses the salt to produce a chlorine gas that dissolves into the water – keeping the water clean.

Some advantages of owning a saltwater pool include:

• Reduced chlorine smell.  The chlorine level is actually the same as chlorine pools, but because the generator converts salt into chlorine and it doesn’t have to be added all at once, the unpleasant odor of chlorine is diminished.

• It’s great for the skin. This type of pool is good for people with sensitive skin or those who suffer from allergies because it is gentle on the skin. In comparison to sea water, saltwater pools help exfoliate your skin, helping to make it softer and smoother.

• Contains low salt levels. Even though it is a saltwater pool, the concentration of salt that goes in it is nowhere near that of the ocean. This means you can safely open your eyes under water and enjoy swimming while submerged in the pool.

• Less maintenance is required.  The great advantage of an automatic chlorine generator is that there will be less chemical adjustments on a weekly basis. Newer saltwater systems work great at automatically sanitizing the pool, but they are not completely maintenance free.  All pools should still be tested on a weekly basis. Still, the self-cleaning of the pool water will mean less routine maintenance than a chlorine pool.
